There was this moment on our honeymoon. We had just finished a late lunch. It was our last full day on the ship. We were sitting in the dining room next to a window with a clear view of the sea. Something became active inside of me, that place that I can best describe as complete awareness.
I was entirely present in that moment, feeling everything intensely. Gratitude for our beautiful trip that was coming to an end. Joy for the memory of our perfect (for us) wedding. Deep happiness and love in the knowledge that it was all coming to a close—the wedding, the honeymoon. Now, we could begin the next steps in our journey through life together.
Something prompted me to look out to the sea and within a few minutes of gazing, I saw them. Beautiful gray dolphins jumping up and out of the water, glittering in the sunlight. I motioned for Matthew to look. We sat in wonder as they slipped gracefully above and below the ocean surface.
After a few minutes, when they were out of sight, I said, “I always love to see dolphins. Always, always.”
Matthew said, “There is something magical about them.”
There was this thud in my heart then, a strong knowledge that, yes, everything was exactly as it should be. Here we were, after all of the years, all of the challenges, all of the love. We made it.
That day we talked about our values—the principles that we want to guide our lives in this next phase. We decided on: Simplicity, Righteousness, Kindness, and Honesty. I will hold onto the memory of that beautiful moment forever and, as we move forward, we will hold these values like lanterns to guide us through the dark when it comes.
